Swimming with dolphins isn't just a vacation trend anymore.

A combination of dolphins and swimming has brought peace to sexual assault survivors.
Sponsored by American Airlines, the Joyful Heart Foundation works with rape crisis centers and programs to incorporate the spiritual experience of swimming with dolphins into therapy for rape survivors.
The not-for-profit organization was founded by Mariska Hargitay, actress on the TV show, "Law and Order: Special Victim's Unit," along with her husband. According to a recent magazine interview, Hargitay admitted that the idea come from her experiences on the show learning about survivors of sexual assault. She fell in love with the wild dolphins while on vacation in 1998. The actress splits her time between New York and L.A. and has used her compassion to try to help others through the dolphin program.
According to the foundation's Web site, the interaction between dolphins and humans has a healing power, especially for people who have suffered psychological or physical trauma. Known to be highly intelligent and intuitive, dolphins are said to be spiritual as well. They use their sonar to scan the water around them and produce energy that resonates in the skull and other areas of the body of people who are around them. Some say the high vibrational transmissions affect the brain favorably in people who swim with dolphins. Recent studies in Florida report that swimming with dolphins change the brain transmission processes of humans in many positive ways.
Although the organization is less than six months old, Hargitay said that with more funds, the Joyful Heart Foundation will be able to help more people.
